Breastfeeding an Infant After Heart Transplant Surgery

The case study describes an infant who was diagnosed 24 hours after birth with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a cognitive malformation of the heart. He received a heart transplant 30 days later. The infant received breast milk before transplant and successfully breastfed after the transplant until the age of 13 months. For the 5 years since the transplant, he has had no complications associated with hypoplastic left heart syndrome.
