Breastfeeding an Infant After Heart Transplant SurgeryShands Hospital, 1600 SW Archer Road, PO Box 100335, Gainesville, FL 32610 The case study describes an infant who was diagnosed 24 hours after birth with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a cognitive malformation of the heart. He received a heart transplant 30 days later. The infant received breast milk before transplant and successfully breastfed after the transplant until the age of 13 months. For the 5 years since the transplant, he has had no complications associated with hypoplastic left heart syndrome.
