Glucose Water Supplementation of the Breastfed Infant During the First Three Days of Life

Linda Shrago, RN, IBCLC

Oklahoma City, OK

A review of breastfeeding management literature fails to identify guidelines for use of water supplements or complements for the breastfed infant in the first three days of life. Admonitions to avoid routine provision of supplements or complements to the breastfeeding infant do not distinguish between formula or glucose water as supplements. In some hospitals, a bottle of glucose water is offered after each breastfeeding. Rationales for providing supplementary or complementary feedings of glucose water are identified. The risks and benefits of this practice are examined.
