La diabetes tipo 2 es una enfermedad seria, costosa y muy común en las comunidades nativas americanas. Cada día aumentan las evidencias que sugieren que la nutrición infantil temprana, y particularmente la lactancia materna puede tener un impacto significativo en el desarrollo de la diabetes en la vida adulta. En este reporte, describimos bases científicas y desarrollo de un programa innovador que se enfoca en la promoción de la lactancia materna en mujeres nativas como una intervención de prevención de la diabetes tipo 2. Presentamos materiales, métodos de evaluación y resultados del programa. Creemos que al desarrollar y compartir estrategias que apoyan la lactancia materna efectivamente, podemos reducir el impacto de la diabetes en las comunidades nativas americanas.
